Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), has intensified efforts to raise standards in private schools by hosting an Approval Intervention Workshop for Grade C and D schools across the state. The event took place on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Alausa, Ikeja, under the theme: “Pathway to Progress: Scaling Up Private Schools for Approval in Lagos State.”

Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Director of the Private Education and Special Programmes Department, clarified that school grading is not punitive but a tool for assessment and improvement. “This exercise is not a judgment but an assessment. The quality of education in Lagos State is only as strong as its weakest link,” he said, urging school proprietors to view gaps in compliance as opportunities for growth.

The workshop aimed to guide schools yet to be approved to meet required standards for safe, quality teaching and learning. Key areas highlighted included compliance with statutory records, safety measures, and physical infrastructure. Mrs. Kehinde Ogunlana, Director of the Approval Unit, emphasized the need for adequate classrooms, proper furniture, and safe structures, advising schools operating from converted residential buildings to conduct structural integrity tests.

The workshop also featured breakout sessions for teachers to engage in collaborative problem-solving, while OEQA officers provided guidance on non-negotiable standards necessary for approval. Mrs. Kafilat Ashimi, Director of Monitoring and Investigation, urged strict adherence to state-approved procedures in handling examinations, discipline, and staff-student relations.

In addition, SEED Care and Support Foundation expressed readiness to support private schools, particularly in the affordable education sector, with interventions focusing on system, community, and school-level improvements.

The initiative forms part of the Lagos State Government’s broader strategy to ensure that all private schools meet minimum standards, fostering safer, well-equipped learning environments and driving overall educational quality.
