The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), in partnership with the Saving One Million Lives Program for Results (SOML-PforR), has taken a major step to strengthen primary healthcare delivery by training 57 Quality Leads from all Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across the state.

The one-day Capacity Building Training on Quality Improvement (QI), held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja, focused on equipping frontline healthcare workers with the skills to enhance service delivery in primary healthcare centres. The training emphasized root-cause analysis, process mapping, performance monitoring, and implementation of Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Bolanle Adelakun, Head of the Quality Control Unit at LSPHCB, stressed the importance of instilling a culture of quality improvement across all levels of service delivery. She said,
"Quality improvement is not a one-off activity; it is a culture that must be nurtured at every level of service delivery. By strengthening the capacity of Quality Leads across our LGAs and LCDAs, we are equipping the system with champions who can identify gaps, drive corrective measures, and ensure that the people of Lagos receive the high-quality care they deserve."

Mrs. Kemi Adeyanju, a QI consultant facilitating the training, added,
"Quality improvement thrives when those closest to the service delivery point understand how to use the right tools to solve problems. This training provides practical, real-world techniques that Quality Leads can apply immediately in their facilities."

Participants expressed optimism about applying their new skills. Mr. Adewale Ogunshina, a Quality Lead from Kosofe LGA, said,
"I feel better equipped to address the challenges in my LGA. The sessions were insightful, and I now have clearer strategies for tracking performance, motivating facility teams, and improving patient satisfaction."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Rukayat Salami from Eti-Osa LCDA noted,
"I am eager to cascade what I have learned to my facility teams so that together we can improve outcomes for mothers, children, and all residents."

The training marks a significant milestone in Lagos State’s efforts to institutionalize quality improvement practices and strengthen primary healthcare services. With continued investments in human resources, system strengthening, and collaborative partnerships, the state aims to set the standard for quality healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
