Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), a move aimed at strengthening regional security and easing travel for citizens across West Africa.
The new card, which incorporates biometric technology, is designed to curb document fraud, improve border control, and facilitate trade, tourism, and labour mobility within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Citizens can now use the ENBIC for intra-regional travel, potentially replacing passports when moving between member states.
Nigeria becomes the seventh ECOWAS country to adopt this identity system. Officials emphasized that the success of the program will depend on efficient card distribution and integration with existing immigration processes to ensure seamless usage.
In a complementary move, the government announced plans to introduce the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) for Nigerians abroad, starting in January 2026, aimed at providing added convenience and security for citizens facing urgent travel needs.
The launch underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional integration, secure travel, and improved citizen services, reflecting broader efforts to leverage technology in strengthening national and West African security frameworks.
