Early Friday morning, a fire outbreak swept through Nkwo Enugu-Ukwu Market in Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, destroying several shops and valuables. The fire started around 3 a.m. and affected provision shops and roofing materials in the area.

This is the sixth fire incident in Anambra State in less than a week. Other recent fires include a petrol tanker explosion near Ozubulu LG Secretariat last Friday, which killed one person and damaged six shops; a fire at a factory in Nnewi on Wednesday; and a fire that gutted a three-storey market building at Nodu Market in Awka South.

The cause of the latest fire was attributed to sparks from an electrical surge caused by sudden power supply in the market. A shop owner, who preferred to remain anonymous, blamed poor electrical connections for the incident. He said that some shop owners were called during the night, but by the time they arrived, the fire had already burned several shops and items before firefighters arrived.

The Anambra State Fire Service responded quickly after receiving the distress call. Chukwudi Chiketa, the Fire Service’s Head of Media, confirmed that firefighting crews arrived promptly and worked to put out the fire. He added that no casualties were reported, and firefighting operations were completed by 4:46 a.m.

The Fire Service strongly advises all shop owners and residents to carry out thorough electrical inspections to prevent future fires and protect their property.
