The Rivers State House of Assembly has delivered a major political statement, passing a sweeping vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and urging him to seek re-election in the 2027 general election. The resolution, which was adopted during plenary on Wednesday, marks one of the earliest and strongest institutional endorsements for a second term bid.
The motion was introduced by the House Leader, Major Jack, who represents Akuku-Toru I Constituency. In presenting the motion, Jack praised President Tinubu’s approach to governance, describing him as a leader who has “steered the ship of the nation in the right direction” despite the complex challenges confronting the country. He said the president had demonstrated not only firm leadership but also a clear interest in the development and stability of Rivers State, a gesture he said the assembly considered significant and worthy of public commendation.
Jack emphasized that the assembly’s appeal for a second term was driven by what he called Tinubu’s genuine “love for Rivers State,” noting that the president’s decisions and engagements since assuming office had shown a willingness to integrate the state into national development priorities. He argued that continuity was necessary for Nigeria’s present policy direction to mature into tangible progress and insisted that the administration’s long-term measures could only yield their fullest impact if the president remained in office beyond 2027.
The motion had more than a dozen sponsors and drew enthusiastic support from lawmakers across the chamber. One after another, members took the floor to express confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and to endorse the call for him to contest again. No dissenting voice was heard during the session, underscoring the assembly’s collective resolve on the matter.
By passing the resolution, the Rivers House of Assembly has inserted itself firmly into the national political conversation, aligning early with the possibility of a second-term bid by the president. The development is expected to attract significant attention across the country, particularly because it comes from a state that has historically played a strong role in shaping political momentum at the federal level.
The assembly’s decision also unfolds at a time when Rivers politics remains delicate, making the endorsement even more consequential. With this move, the lawmakers have positioned themselves as unmistakable supporters of the current administration, signaling a clear political direction ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
