A yet-to-be-confirmed number of residents were reportedly killed when unknown armed men launched a violent attack near the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as the assailants opened fire indiscriminately on unsuspecting members of the community. Some residents were fatally injured while others fled for their lives. One source recounted, “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack; the attack has left our community shaken.”
Video footage circulating online showed terrified residents running for safety while several lifeless bodies lay on the ground. The images have sparked widespread concern and condemnation across social media.
Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, confirmed the development in a press statement, saying that relevant security agencies had been contacted and investigations were already underway. “This evening, I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community,” Okoye stated. “The incident resulted in multiple casualties, caused by unknown assailants who carried out this senseless act of violence. I strongly condemn this heartbreaking incident and the attempt to disrupt the peace of our beloved community.”
Okoye appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives. “I appeal to all Ndi Nawfia to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with security operatives as they work tirelessly to restore normalcy and ensure our safety. My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. On behalf of the Nawfia Progressive Union, I extend our deepest sympathies and assure you that we are fully committed to supporting efforts aimed at protecting lives and maintaining peace in Nawfia,” he said.
Sources indicated that the police have launched an investigation into the attack and are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrators. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, but local authorities have promised heightened security presence in the area to prevent further incidents.
Community members expressed shock and fear following the attack, with several calling for an immediate increase in security personnel to restore a sense of safety. Many residents reportedly stayed indoors throughout the evening as authorities responded to the crisis.
The attack underscores a growing concern over the security situation in parts of Anambra State, where sporadic violence and criminal activity continue to threaten civilian lives. Residents have urged both state and federal authorities to intensify intelligence-led operations and improve local policing to protect communities vulnerable to armed attacks.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information about the attackers to come forward and assist security agencies in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
