A 58-year-old man, identified as Vitalis Nwoko, has been arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly beating his wife, Uloma, to death in Umuagba community, Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect was apprehended by operatives attached to the Ahiazu Mbaise Divisional Police Headquarters following a formal complaint lodged by the deceased’s sister, who accused Nwoko of violently assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute. Police sources said the report prompted an immediate response, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Command, SP Henry Okoye, disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had a serious misunderstanding on December 11, 2025, which degenerated into a physical confrontation.

“During interrogation, the suspect stated that a disagreement between him and his wife escalated into a physical altercation,” Okoye said. “In the course of the incident, the woman reportedly collapsed and was rushed to Cecilia Hospital, Ogbe, where a medical doctor confirmed her dead.”

The police spokesperson added that the suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for a comprehensive investigation, after which he will be charged to court in accordance with the law.

Reacting to the tragic incident, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned all forms of domestic violence and described the case as unfortunate and avoidable. He urged residents of the state to promptly report cases of domestic abuse and other forms of violence to the nearest police station.

“The Command will not tolerate domestic violence or any act that threatens human life,” CP Danjuma said. “We assure the public that anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law.”

The incident has sparked renewed calls from community members and rights advocates for increased awareness and intervention against domestic violence, as well as the need for couples to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes.
