Dansadau, Zamfara State — Public frustration boiled over this week in a dramatic confrontation between residents and a federal lawmaker from Zamfara State, as an angry mob physically attacked the legislator in Dansadau town, accusing him of neglect, poor performance and abandonment of his constituency since assuming office.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, according to eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating online, which showed the lawmaker being slapped, dragged and manhandled by a crowd before security operatives eventually intervened to whisk him away to safety.

Residents in the Dansadau area — located within the Dansadau Emirate of Maru Local Government Area — expressed deep-seated resentment toward the lawmaker, who is reported to serve in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Witnesses said the crowd was heard chanting “bamayi,” a Hausa expression conveying rejection and anger, as the legislator was accosted by constituents who feel he has failed to deliver on promises and has largely been absent from community affairs.

The unrest reflects widespread disillusionment among some Zamfara residents regarding perceived unfulfilled expectations, including a lack of visible development projects, empowerment programmes, or regular engagement with the communities that elected him. Voices captured in the video alleged that repeated appeals for the lawmaker’s attention to local needs had been ignored, fueling resentment that ultimately erupted into violence.

Though the lawmaker’s identity has not been officially confirmed in public statements from authorities, the footage depicts a visibly enraged crowd overpowering security personnel and confronting the legislator directly as he visited the area. Responding security officers were eventually able to force the lawmaker into a waiting vehicle and remove him from the scene.

Social media reactions to the incident were swift and intensely divided, with many Nigerians expressing support for constituents holding their representatives to account, while others cautioned against violent acts directed at elected officials. Commenters debated whether the confrontation signalled a broader shift in political accountability or a dangerous descent into vigilantism.

There has been no immediate official response from the lawmaker, the Zamfara State Government, the Nigeria Police Force or the House of Representatives as of this report, leaving the precise circumstances and any planned investigations or disciplinary actions unclear.

The episode highlights rising public frustration in parts of northern Nigeria, where constituents increasingly express dissatisfaction with leadership perceived as unresponsive to urgent socio-economic and security needs. In Zamfara State itself, chronic insecurity caused by banditry and other challenges has compounded political grievances, making demands for effective governance a potent public issue.

As calls grow for greater accountability from political leaders at all levels, the incident in Dansadau may spark broader discussions both in Zamfara and nationally about representative performance, civic engagement and the appropriate channels for expressing public discontent in a democratic society.
