Abeokuta, Nigeria — The Ogun State Police Command has intensified its fight against violent crime with the arrest of a suspected armed robber and the recovery of firearms in what security officials describe as part of a sustained crackdown on criminality across the state.
According to a statement released by the Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Criminal Investigation Department, operatives apprehended a suspected armed robber identified simply as Adenekan, popularly known as “Expensive,” following credible intelligence about his unlawful possession of firearms. The arrest took place on Sunday, December 14, 2025, after officers acted swiftly on information indicating that the suspect was armed and posing a threat to public safety.
During the operation, police recovered two pump-action guns from the suspect, affirming the command’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal possession of weapons and armed robbery. Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo commended the prompt response of the operatives, emphasising that the proactive move helped to deny violent criminals the means to terrorise residents.
“The swift action of our men underscores the command’s commitment to security and the protection of lives and property,” DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command’s spokesperson, stated. He reiterated the ongoing effort by the police to clamp down on armed robbery and related violent crimes, urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible tips that aid law enforcement.
Police say the suspect allegedly brandished the weapons during a minor disagreement, highlighting how the ready availability of illegal firearms can quickly escalate seemingly small incidents into dangerous confrontations. Investigations are now underway to trace the source of the recovered firearms, with plans to charge the suspect in court once the inquiry is completed.
The development forms part of broader security efforts across Nigeria, where police and security agencies have in recent months ramped up operations targeting armed robbery syndicates, cult groups and other violent offenders. In some states, coordinated intelligence-led actions have resulted in multiple arrests and seizures of firearms, ammunition and other weapons — contributing to wider national strategies to reduce violent crime and enhance public safety.
Commissioner Ogunlowo reaffirmed the command’s resolve to sustain pressure on criminal networks, particularly as holidays approach, a period when incidents of robbery and violent offences historically rise. Residents have been encouraged to report suspicious activities through the police emergency lines, reinforcing the collaborative role of communities in ensuring peace and security.
The arrest and recovery of firearms in Ogun State mark another milestone in the ongoing campaign to suppress armed robbery and criminal violence, sending a clear message that security agencies remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding citizens against threats posed by illegal weapons and criminal elements.
