Abuja, Nigeria — In a move that has drawn nationwide attention, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, in Bauchi State, in honour of the late Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi. The decision, announced during a condolence visit by the president to the renowned cleric’s family, is intended to immortalise his legacy and recognise his lifelong contributions to faith, education and peace in Nigeria and beyond.
President Tinubu declared that the university — formerly known as the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare — will henceforth be called Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University. He described the late cleric’s death as a “great national loss,” emphasising the profound influence Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi had on generations of Nigerians through his devotion to Islamic scholarship, humility, and commitment to moral leadership.
The announcement was made on Saturday, December 20, 2025, during Tinubu’s visit to Bauchi State to offer condolences to the family and government officials. The president prayed for Allah’s mercy on the soul of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and urged Nigerians to continue to pray for peace, unity and prosperity across the country.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, a revered figure in the Tijjaniyya Islamic order, was widely respected for his intellectual depth, spiritual leadership and efforts in promoting peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance. His works and teachings drew followers across religious and ethnic lines within Nigeria and the wider West African region.
The renaming of the university to Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University is seen by many observers as a tribute to not only his religious stature but also his advocacy for education and humanitarian values. Family members expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for the honour, noting that it reinforces the important role the cleric played in shaping public life and spiritual discourse.
Governor Mohammed also commended the president’s decision, describing it as a fitting recognition of Sheikh Bauchi’s legacy and an enduring symbol of respect from both the federal and state governments. He reiterated that the gesture will forever link the cleric’s name with academic excellence, spiritual inspiration and national pride.
Senior government officials who accompanied President Tinubu on the visit included the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Health Ali Pate, and several state governors. Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion and the national regard for Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s contributions.
The renaming initiative comes at a time when education and national unity remain central themes in political and social discourse, with many Nigerians welcoming efforts to honour figures who have shaped the country’s moral and intellectual landscape.
