Gombe, Nigeria — A tragic road accident in Gombe State has claimed the lives of seven people, prompting a sombre response from the state’s governor and drawing renewed attention to road-safety challenges in the region. The victims were reportedly from the Lawanti community in Akko Local Government Area, and were on their way to Maiduguri, Borno State, to attend a wedding ceremony when the fatal crash occurred.

The accident has been widely mourned by state officials and relatives. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya described the incident as “painful and devastating,” noting that the loss of life has deeply affected not only the families of the victims but also the broader Lawanti community and all of Gombe State. In an official statement signed by Ismaila Misilli, Director-General (Press Affairs) at the Gombe Government House, the governor offered heartfelt condolences and prayers for the bereaved families.

Governor Yahaya urged residents to take comfort in faith during this difficult time, asking that Almighty Allah grant strength, patience and fortitude to the families, envelop the departed souls in mercy and forgive their shortcomings. He also called for collective reflection on road safety and the need for vigilance by motorists, especially during travel to social events and long-distance journeys.

The deaths highlight ongoing concerns over road safety in Nigeria, where traffic collisions remain a persistent cause of fatalities and injuries. In Gombe State, authorities and road-safety agencies have previously highlighted similar tragedies, including other fatal collisions involving vehicles and public transport along rural and inter-state routes. These recurring incidents often underscore structural challenges such as vehicle conditions, excessive speed, mechanical failures and enforcement gaps.

Local leaders and community members have reiterated calls for improved enforcement of traffic regulations, enhanced driver training, better vehicle maintenance standards and community education on safe travel — particularly during peak travel seasons and festive periods when the volume of road users increases. The Bereaved families and residents alike are now grappling with the loss of loved ones while awaiting further information from traffic authorities on the precise circumstances of the accident, including official findings on its cause.

As investigations continue, the state government has pledged support for families affected by the crash and reiterated that efforts will be intensified to prevent similar tragedies.
