Benin City, Edo State — The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 43‑year‑old man, Amadin Williams, in connection with the brutal killing of his childhood friend, Eghosa Osas, during a Christmas housewarming party in Oben community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area, in a case that has left residents reeling and authorities promising justice.

According to the police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the tragic incident was reported by the victim’s elder brother and revolves around a celebration that turned deadly on 22 December 2025, when friends and family had gathered to mark a housewarming and Christmas reunion. The victim, identified as Eghosa Osas, had recently returned from abroad with his family for the festive season.

Eyewitness accounts and official police briefings indicate that Eghosa excused himself from the party to use a restroom area, at which point the suspect, believed to be his childhood friend, allegedly cornered him and inflicted a fatal machete wound to the neck, leading to his immediate death. The motive for the attack remains unknown, and the pair’s relationship context is still under investigation by the police.

Following the murder, the suspect initially fled the scene, prompting an intensive manhunt by law enforcement. Police later tracked and arrested Williams in Benin City on 27 December 2025, where he was found hiding, according to the state command. The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue, and he is expected to be charged in court upon conclusion of the inquiry.

The police portrayal of the killing underscores the devastating impact of violent disputes even among friends and within close community networks. Residents of Oben community expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, describing Eghosa as a respected member of the community whose return from abroad had been a source of joy for many.

Local reactions have been shaped by both grief and concern about escalating violent crime in the region. Members of the community lamented that an event meant to foster togetherness and celebration instead resulted in tragedy. The loss of Eghosa, particularly during a season of reunion and festivity, has cast a pall over the neighbourhood and raised questions about underlying tensions that may have existed between the parties involved.

The Edo State Police Command has emphasised its commitment to pursuing justice in the case. Police spokesperson Ikoedem reiterated that the suspect will be formally charged once investigations are complete, and urged community members to cooperate with law enforcement while avoiding speculation that might hinder due process.

The circumstances of the attack — involving a machete assault at a social gathering — highlight persistent concerns about violent crime in Edo State, even as broader policing efforts have seen hundreds of arrests across categories of serious offences throughout 2025. State police officials have used recent high‑profile investigations to underline their ongoing efforts to improve public safety and restore confidence in law enforcement’s ability to tackle violent crime.

As the investigation unfolds and the legal process takes shape, attention will likely turn to uncovering a clearer picture of the motive behind the attack and whether any additional individuals were involved or if the incident was isolated. For the grieving family and friends of Eghosa Osas, the arrest of the suspect offers a first step toward accountability, even as the community mourns a life cut short amid celebrations.
