Makun, Ogun State — World-renowned British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has survived a serious road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two other people, while he sustained only minor injuries, according to multiple local and international reports. The crash occurred on Monday, 29 December 2025, on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, a busy section of the highway linking Nigeria’s largest cities and commercial hubs.
Eyewitnesses and traffic authorities say the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua reportedly collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, close to the Sagamu interchange on the expressway. The exact sequence of events that led to the collision remains under investigation by road safety officials and police, with early assessments suggesting that the truck was parked on the highway at the time.
Local traffic authorities and emergency responders were quick to arrive at the scene after the accident, where they treated Joshua — who was reportedly seated in the rear of the vehicle — for minor injuries before transporting him for further medical evaluation. Officials described his condition as stable and said he was expected to recover fully.
Tragically, two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, with responders confirming their deaths on arrival. The identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released, and it remains unclear whether they were members of Joshua’s entourage, drivers or other occupants of the SUV.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) are among the agencies overseeing the investigation, which aims to ascertain the conditions that contributed to the collision. Lagos–Ibadan Expressway — known for heavy traffic and challenging driving conditions — has been the site of numerous accidents, often involving stalled vehicles and high-speed traffic.
Joshua, 36, a two-time world heavyweight champion and former unified titleholder, had been in Nigeria following diplomatic, personal and heritage engagements, catalysed in part by his recent sixth-round knockout win against Jake Paul in Miami earlier this month. The boxer’s Nigerian roots — his parents hail from Sagamu in Ogun State — have drawn particular attention to the crash’s location and the global reaction to it.
Social media quickly filled with concern and messages of support for Joshua as news of the crash spread. Fans and fellow athletes expressed relief that the former world champion survived with relatively light injuries despite the severity of the wreck. At the same time, condolences poured in for the families of the two people who lost their lives in the accident.
The timing of the crash — coming just days after Joshua’s return to competitive prominence — adds to the global interest in the incident. Investigators have urged caution as the probe continues, with authorities appealing for witnesses and motorists with dashcam footage to assist in clarifying what occurred.
As of now, Joshua’s management and boxing camp have not issued a detailed public health update, and names of the deceased have not been formally released. The ongoing inquiry and the condition of any other injured parties remain under close watch by both local officials and international media outlets.
