Bagudo, Kebbi State — Residents of Bagudo Local Government Area were thrown into alarm early on Tuesday morning after a loud explosion shook the General Hospital in Bagudo, prompting a swift security response and a comprehensive investigation. Authorities have confirmed that no casualties were recorded despite the blast, which damaged part of the hospital’s staff quarters but occurred after occupants had evacuated safely.

The Kebbi State Police Command, speaking through Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman, assured the public that the situation is under control and that residents’ safety remains a priority. The explosion, which occurred in the early hours of the day, triggered panic among patients, medical staff and nearby community members before security forces moved in to secure the scene.

A joint security team comprising personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the military and local vigilante groups was quickly dispatched to the hospital. Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD‑CBRN) unit were also deployed to assess the blast site, evaluate risks and ensure there were no further threats to public safety.

According to the police, the explosion affected a building within the hospital’s staff quarters, but because those present had already evacuated prior to the blast, no loss of life or injuries have been reported. Authorities emphasised that their priority was to safeguard lives, and that the early evacuation likely prevented potential casualties.

In a bid to maintain calm, the Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State ordered additional tactical deployments in and around the hospital to deter any opportunistic criminal activity and to reassure residents still on edge following the explosion. Investigators have begun a thorough inquiry into the cause of the blast, with police urging the public to steer clear of the immediate area to avoid obstructing security operations.

The police statement also highlighted that occupied areas of the hospital were secured prior to the explosion, suggesting that early detection of danger signals or other warning signs enabled hospital staff and patients to exit safely. Officials declined to speculate on the cause of the detonation, saying that a detailed forensic investigation is underway to determine its origin and whether any criminal elements were involved.

Following the incident, residents and commuters in Bagudo reported hearing a powerful blast that rattled nearby buildings, resulting in immediate fear and flight among those close to the hospital. Social media posts from locals captured the anxiety and confusion that accompanied the explosion before official confirmation from security agencies.

Kebbi State authorities have encouraged calm and cooperation during the ongoing inquiry, reassuring the public that security measures remain robust and that the explosion appears to have been contained without endangering lives. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
