Benin City, Nigeria — The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has issued a public statement distancing the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, from the alleged mishandling of an incident involving Pedro Obaseki, describing the episode as unauthorised and inconsistent with the character of the revered monarch.
In the official announcement dated December 31, 2025, and released from the Oba Palace, Benin City, the council stated that the action attributed to Pedro Obaseki was not sanctioned by the Oba of Benin and therefore should not be linked to the traditional institution. The BTC emphasized that such conduct does not align with the long-standing reputation of the Oba as a peace-loving father to all.
“The unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was mishandled was not authorized by the Oba of Benin,” the statement read, adding that the monarch would not approve such actions under any circumstance.
The council further warned youths and members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, regardless of provocation, stressing the importance of respecting the laws of the land. It urged that all security and legal matters be handled strictly by appropriate security agencies, reinforcing the rule of law and due process.
In an apparent response to widespread online reactions, the Benin Traditional Council also cautioned social media users to verify information before sharing, noting that misinformation could inflame tensions and misrepresent the stance of the palace.
The statement was issued on behalf of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, CFR, who also extended New Year greetings to the public. It was signed by Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.
The announcement comes amid public debate and heightened scrutiny following reports surrounding the alleged incident, with the palace now making clear its position in order to preserve the integrity of the Benin traditional institution and calm public discourse.
