KANO, NIGERIA — A National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) volunteer has been stabbed to death by suspected hoodlums in Kano State, prompting an intensive manhunt that led to the arrest of three suspects, security sources confirmed on Friday, January 2, 2026.

The tragic incident took place in the early hours of Thursday at a community security checkpoint in Kano, where the NSCDC volunteer — whose identity has not yet been released — was on duty assisting local law enforcement and civil defence operatives. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, described as a gang of armed youths, arrived at the checkpoint and immediately engaged the volunteer in an unprovoked attack that resulted in multiple stab wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after being rushed for medical attention.

The Kano State Command of the NSCDC confirmed the death in a statement, emphasising that the slain volunteer was performing duties alongside uniformed officers when he was fatally wounded. The command condemned what it described as a brazen act of violence and vowed to ensure that justice is served.

Following the stabbing, security operatives from the NSCDC, Nigeria Police Force and Kano State Rapid Response Squad launched coordinated operations across suspected criminal hotspots and neighbourhoods around the incident scene. Within a short time, three suspects were arrested in connection with the killing. The suspects, who are currently in custody, are assisting detectives with enquiries and preliminary investigations. Authorities said that further arrests could follow as investigations deepen.

While formal identities of the detained suspects have not been made public, residents and security officials alike expressed relief at the swift action, noting that swift arrests are vital to maintaining public confidence and deterring similar attacks on security personnel. The Kano Command has also urged anyone with information related to the attack to volunteer details that could aid the ongoing probe.

The NSCDC plays a key role in community security across Nigeria, often working alongside the police and other agencies to protect critical infrastructure, guard public spaces, and assist in emergency response. Incidents involving attacks on security volunteers and personnel have drawn widespread condemnation in recent years, with national leaders and civil society organisations calling for greater protection for those serving in frontline roles.

The Kano State Government has pledged support for the victim’s family and condemned the killing in the strongest terms, condemning attacks on security agents as “unacceptable assaults on the rule of law.” Officials said they will work with federal and state law enforcement agencies to ensure the suspects are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

As investigations continue, security operatives are expected to release additional details including possible motives behind the attack and the next steps in the prosecution of those apprehended. Meanwhile, community leaders have appealed for calm, urging residents to cooperate with authorities and provide any information that could assist in bringing more suspects to justice.
