Several residents were killed and injured on Monday night when armed bandits launched coordinated attacks on Unguwar Alhaji Barau, Gidan Dan Mai-gizo and Gidan Hazo communities in Na’alma Ward of Malumfashi Local Government Area, Katsina State, deepening fears over the worsening security situation in the region.
According to local sources, the assailants stormed the communities under the cover of darkness, opening fire indiscriminately and causing panic among residents. The attackers reportedly moved from one settlement to another, leaving a trail of casualties and destruction in their wake. While the exact number of those killed and injured could not be immediately confirmed, witnesses said the toll was significant, with several victims left critically wounded.
In addition to the killings, the bandits abducted an unspecified number of residents during the attacks. Families of those taken away were left distraught as the gunmen fled with their captives into nearby forests, a pattern that has become common in the area amid recurring banditry.
Residents said the attacks were swift and overwhelming, with little resistance possible before the bandits escaped. Some villagers reportedly fled into surrounding bushes to escape the violence, while others remained trapped in their homes during the ordeal.
The latest incident comes amid persistent insecurity in Malumfashi and other parts of Katsina State, where bandit attacks, kidnappings and reprisal raids have continued despite various peace efforts and security operations. Community members have repeatedly expressed frustration over what they describe as inadequate security presence and slow response to distress calls.
As of the time of reporting, there had been no official statement from security authorities confirming the casualty figures or the number of abducted persons. However, residents are calling on the government and security agencies to urgently deploy reinforcements to the affected areas, intensify patrols and take decisive action to protect lives and property.
The attacks have further heightened anxiety across surrounding communities, with fears that the violence could spread if urgent measures are not taken. Many residents say they now live in constant fear, uncertain about their safety as night falls.
