Toronto police have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi, a third-year University of Toronto student from India, near the Scarborough campus. The victim was found with life-threatening injuries on the Highland Creek Trail on December 23 and was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency responders arrived.
Police confirmed on January 7 that 28-year-old Babatunde Afuwape has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to the killing. Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe described the incident as a “deeply tragic case,” highlighting that Avasthi was a young student with significant promise and a future ahead of him.
Investigators have indicated that there is no evidence the victim and the suspect knew each other prior to the incident. Authorities believe the killing was a planned and deliberate act, although the motive remains unclear.
The shooting has raised concerns among university students and members of the surrounding community, particularly those who regularly use the Highland Creek Trail. Police have reassured the public that the suspect is in custody and are urging anyone who was on or near the trail or campus on the day of the shooting, and who may have had contact with the accused, to come forward with information to aid the ongoing investigation.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and community cooperation as they work to ensure the safety of the area and prevent similar incidents in the future.
