Benin City, Edo State — The Edo State Police Command has arrested Martina Dachung and two other suspects in connection with the alleged sale of a newborn baby for ₦1.4 million in Uromi, Edo Central Senatorial District, police and media reports confirm.
The case came to light after Ebhomien Matthew Asibor of Uromi alerted the police on January 8, 2026, reporting what he believed to be a child‑trafficking arrangement involving a mother and others. Acting on the information, operatives from the Iruekpen Divisional Headquarters moved swiftly, arresting Martina Dachung, who is alleged to be the newborn’s mother. She subsequently led officers to the arrest of Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Centre in Uromi and Oha Promise, both believed to be connected to the illegal transaction.
Police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem said the suspects were detained after the tip‑off prompted a targeted investigation, with the aim of unraveling the suspected child trafficking network. During the operation, the newborn baby boy was safely retrieved by police, and evidence of the monetary transaction of ₦1.4 million was recovered from the scene.
The police emphasized that the matter remains under active investigation and that the suspects would be charged in court once inquiries are concluded. The development underscores concerns about child trafficking and illegal baby sales in the region, prompting authorities to reiterate their commitment to protecting vulnerable children and prosecuting offenders to the fullest extent of the law.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, assured residents that the command remains committed to combating all forms of crime and encouraged members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence to police to aid security efforts across the state.
