Canadian Police Charge Nigerian Man Over Alleged Roommate Stabbing in Ontario

Oshawa, Ontario — Canadian police have charged a 38‑year‑old Nigerian man, Nnamdi Enunwa, in connection with an alleged stabbing incident involving his roommate in Oshawa, Ontario, authorities confirmed as part of a growing investigation that has drawn public attention and an appeal for community assistance.

The Central East Division Police said officers responded to multiple distress calls on Thursday, 1 January 2026, after neighbours in the Ritson Road North and Adelaide Avenue East area reported a violent altercation at a residential address. Upon arrival at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time, officers located both the suspect and the injured roommate inside the residence. The suspect was arrested without incident, while the victim was taken to a local hospital with serious but non‑life‑threatening injuries, according to a police statement.

Police allege that Enunwa assaulted and stabbed his roommate during what appears to have been a dispute, but have not released details on what led to the altercation. The victim’s injuries were described by officials as serious but not life‑threatening, and they are expected to recover. The Central East Division Police said the assault involved a weapon, and the case remains under investigation. Enunwa is currently being held pending a bail hearing and has been formally charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing a criminal offence.

Officials emphasised that the charges are allegations and have not yet been proven in court, underscoring the Canadian justice system’s presumption of innocence until conviction. The police have appealed to members of the public who may have additional information about the incident to come forward. Detective Baldini of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Branch is leading the inquiry, and witnesses or those with relevant details are encouraged to contact the police directly. Authorities also welcomed anonymous tips through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers, noting that informants might be eligible for a cash reward for information that helps the investigation.

The Oshawa stabbing case has surfaced amid heightened attention to violent incidents in Canada involving foreign nationals. It follows recent reports, including a separate stabbing case involving a Nigerian student charged with the murder of an Indian university student late last year, intensifying discussions around community safety and the handling of criminal allegations involving international residents. Police reaffirmed that their focus remains on the facts of each case and the pursuit of justice through lawful procedures.
