The Nigerian Army has dismissed a serving soldier for allegedly leaking a video of a deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, military sources have confirmed.
Top military insiders told journalists that the punitive action followed the online circulation of a video recorded shortly after an IED blast near Gubio, in Borno State, which killed several soldiers. The footage, according to the sources, was recorded by the soldier who has now been dismissed from service. The military views unauthorised internal disclosures of field footage as a serious breach of discipline and operational security.
The soldier has been identified as Mansur Adamu, with service number 22NA/82/3795 PTE. A photograph circulating in media reports shows him holding a placard bearing his name and number following the dismissal.
According to the reports, the IED incident occurred about two weeks before the dismissal and resulted in the deaths of several soldiers. The victims were reportedly travelling from Maiduguri when their vehicle struck explosive devices believed to have been planted by Boko Haram fighters. Multiple soldiers were also seriously injured in the attack, underscoring the deadly nature of insurgent tactics in the region.
The Nigerian Army, like many armed forces, enforces strict regulations governing the release of operational footage and information. Leaks of sensitive imagery or video from conflict zones are treated as violations of military discipline and can undermine operational security, morale and strategic messaging. In this case, sources said the army considered the dissemination of the footage a breach of such protocols, triggering the dismissal.
The attack in Borno highlights the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram and allied insurgent factions in northeastern Nigeria. While Nigerian forces have continued operations against insurgent groups under Operation HADIN KAI, militants still employ roadside bombs and ambush tactics to inflict casualties on troops and disrupt security efforts.
The dismissal of the soldier is part of the military’s broader effort to maintain discipline and control over sensitive information related to operations against insurgents. Military authorities have not issued a public statement on the specific case, and attempts to reach official spokespersons for comment were not immediately successful.
This incident underscores the delicate balance security forces maintain between transparency, public information and protecting the integrity of ongoing military operations in conflict-affected areas of the country.
