Asaba — The Delta State Police Command has arrested a young woman who allegedly orchestrated a staged robbery against her boyfriend by contacting what she believed were armed robbers to extort money from him. The suspect, whose name and identity have not been publicly disclosed, told police she initiated the plot because she needed money — reportedly about ₦7 million — to pay for her sister’s medical bills, according to police sources and law enforcement statements.
Delta State Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said officers uncovered the scheme after the woman approached individuals she thought were criminals in one of Warri’s notorious “bad spots” to arrange the fake attack. She was said to have paid a “deposit” to facilitate the robbery, intending that the gunmen would rob her boyfriend of cash and valuables to satisfy her financial demand.
Unknown to her, the people she contacted were in fact vigilante operatives working with the police or in cooperation with law enforcement. After receiving her instructions and being taken to the boyfriend’s residence, those operatives alerted police, who arrived and arrested both the woman and the supposed armed robbers as part of a sting operation.
Police were able to recover the intended items of theft — including a gold hand chain and necklace reportedly worth about ₦13.1 million — during the intervention, which confirmed that the entire plot had been fabricated by the suspect.
In a video shown to journalists, the confiscated jewellery was displayed by investigators, and when questioned, the suspect reportedly expressed remorse for her actions. The state police spokesman cautioned the public against engaging in criminal activities to solve personal or financial problems, emphasising that such schemes often lead to arrest and prosecution rather than the desired outcome.
Officials have reiterated that police will continue to pursue and prosecute individuals who engage in or attempt to orchestrate violent crime, even when self-justifications like medical needs are cited, stressing that collusion with criminals or staging attacks undermines public safety and can result in serious legal consequences.
