Abuja, Nigeria — A 27-year-old woman identified as Esther Akwaji tragically collapsed and died under mysterious circumstances at her boyfriend’s residence in Dei-Dei, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), law enforcement authorities have confirmed. The incident, which has sparked concern and a police manhunt, occurred on January 21, 2026, and remains under active investigation by the FCT Police Command.

According to information gathered from family sources and preliminary police statements, Esther, a native of Nasarawa State, had travelled to Abuja earlier in the week to visit relatives. On the day of the incident, she informed her family that she was heading to a bank in Dei-Dei but never returned home, prompting initial concern among relatives. Hours later, the family received a call from a man claiming to be her boyfriend, using Esther’s mobile phone to relay details of what had transpired.

During that call, the man told Esther’s family that the couple had been eating together when she suddenly began vomiting and collapsing, displaying signs of severe distress. He claimed to have rushed her to Kubwa General Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead on arrival. However, the details provided by the man have raised suspicion, particularly after he reportedly fled the hospital and disappeared, making him the prime suspect in the unfolding case.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the police had commenced a thorough investigation into Esther’s death. She said that the victim’s body has been deposited for an autopsy, which is expected to provide clarity on the actual cause of death. In addition, the police have launched efforts to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed.

“We have taken custody of the deceased’s body for a thorough autopsy to determine the actual cause of death,” Adeh stated, emphasising that the investigation is ongoing and that all leads are being pursued to bring the suspect to justice. She appealed to the public to remain calm while the police conduct their work.

Residents of Dei-Dei and surrounding districts expressed shock at the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s demise. The case has drawn attention to concerns about personal safety in private residences and the need for prompt, transparent investigation of sudden deaths involving potential foul play. Local community leaders have urged law enforcement to expedite the manhunt and ensure that any responsible party is held accountable under the law.

At this stage, details about the relationship between Esther and the suspect remain unclear, and police have not indicated whether there is evidence of criminal intent beyond the suspect’s flight from the scene. The autopsy results are eagerly anticipated by both the family and investigators, as they may provide critical insights into whether her death was due to natural causes, poisoning, violence, or other factors.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspect to come forward. Members of the public are reminded that cooperation with law enforcement is essential in resolving cases of sudden and unexplained deaths, particularly when questions about a suspect’s behaviour arise in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

As the investigation continues, the tragic loss of a young woman whose life was cut short in unclear circumstances serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and sensitivities involved in such cases. The FCT Police Command has pledged to provide updates as new information emerges.
