Nigerian football star and Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is in mourning following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died in a road accident in Delta State earlier this week. The tragic incident occurred in Umunede, Delta State, where the retired military officer was involved in a traffic collision and subsequently taken to a hospital in nearby Agbor, where he was pronounced dead.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday by Ndidi’s club, Beşiktaş JK, which issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss. In its message shared on the club’s official X account, the Turkish side conveyed condolences to Ndidi and his family, praying for mercy for the late Sunday Ndidi and comfort for those he left behind.
Sunday Ndidi had served as a military officer before his retirement, and his son frequently spoke about the influence his father had on his life and career. Earlier this year, during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Ndidi dedicated a goal he scored for Nigeria in the tournament to his father, citing his admiration for former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo — a player his father admired and often spoke about.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also publicly mourned the death. In a statement released by the federation, General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi expressed profound shock and sadness over the passing of Mr. Sunday Ndidi. The NFF acknowledged Ndidi’s recent contributions on the pitch, including helping Nigeria secure a third‑place finish at AFCON, and prayed for comfort and strength for the bereaved family.
Fans, teammates, and members of the Nigerian football community have extended condolences to Ndidi and his family, recognising both the personal loss and the impact Sunday Ndidi had on his son’s journey, from grassroots football in Nigeria to the international stage and professional leagues abroad.
Wilfred Ndidi, who has been a key figure for both his club and the Super Eagles, is expected to take time away from professional duties as he grieves the loss of his father. His father’s death comes at a moment when Ndidi’s leadership and performance have been under strong spotlight following his captaincy and pivotal role in recent national team success.
