Abuja/Lagos, Nigeria — Popular Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has reportedly been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre in connection with an alleged cybercrime matter involving her colleague, actress Mercy Johnson. The development was widely shared on social media by industry figures and entertainment journalists on January 28, 2026

According to multiple reports, Okorie was apprehended at her residence in Lagos on January 27, 2026, by officers acting on a complaint believed to be tied to online conduct that drew legal scrutiny. Following her arrest, she was taken into custody at the Yaba, Panti Police Station, where she spent the night because no immediate flight was available to transfer her to the Federal Capital Territory.

Early the next morning, Okorie was reportedly placed on a 6 a.m. flight to Abuja, where she is expected to face court proceedings connected to the cybercrime allegations. Details of the specific charges have not been publicly disclosed by police authorities, and no formal statement has been released by the Nigeria Police Force regarding the matter as of the time of reporting.

The arrest appears to stem from a prolonged and highly publicised online dispute between Okorie and Johnson that has unfolded over several years. Okorie has previously made controversial statements about Johnson on social media, including personal and spiritual accusations, some of which she later acknowledged were made in emotional distress and for which she publicly apologised. Despite earlier attempts at reconciliation, reports indicate that tensions resurfaced online, drawing formal legal attention.

Reactions from within the entertainment community have been mixed. Some industry figures and commentators have called for Okorie’s release and stressed the need for due process, urging that any complaint be addressed through appropriate legal channels rather than punitive measures. A prominent Nollywood producer and blogger took to social media to warn against the alleged arrest, emphasising concerns over human rights and legal standards.

Fans and followers of both actresses have taken to social platforms to share their views, with a range of opinions emerging about accountability, freedom of expression, and the implications of the police action. At the time of reporting, neither Angela Okorie nor Mercy Johnson has issued an official comment on the situation.

The case is now pending in court in Abuja, where further legal proceedings are expected to clarify the nature of the allegations and the next steps in the judicial process.
