The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has issued a strong warning against foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, reaffirming the nation’s sovereignty and the constitutional rights of its citizens. The statement was delivered by Bashir Umar, president of the council, during the SCSN’s annual pre-Ramadan lecture and general assembly held in Abuja on Wednesday, 28 January 2026. The event was themed “Nigeria’s Future: Faith, Justice and Leadership.”

Umar emphasised that the council opposes any attempts to establish foreign military bases on Nigerian territory, describing such moves as a threat to national sovereignty and a potential destabilising factor for the country. He warned that foreign intervention, even under the pretext of security cooperation, could undermine Nigeria’s autonomy and the ability of its citizens to determine their own security and developmental priorities.

Speaking on religious rights, the SCSN president reaffirmed that the religious freedom of Muslims in Nigeria is constitutionally guaranteed and non-negotiable. He stressed that the council remains committed to safeguarding the spiritual, social, and legal rights of the Muslim community, highlighting the importance of faith-based values in shaping governance and societal development.

Umar also condemned acts of terrorism and violent extremism, calling on all Nigerians to remain vigilant and united against threats to peace and security. He urged government authorities and religious leaders to collaborate in promoting dialogue, justice, and ethical leadership, arguing that social cohesion and rule of law are essential for national stability.

The council’s lecture and assembly come at a time of heightened security concerns in northern and central Nigeria, where communities have faced repeated attacks from armed groups. By addressing both the dangers of foreign intrusion and domestic terrorism, the SCSN signalled its intent to influence national conversations on sovereignty, religious freedom, and governance ahead of the upcoming Ramadan season.
