Damaturu, Yobe State — The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly killing a fellow villager in Bundila Village, Gulani Local Government Area, following suspicion that the victim was involved in an affair with his wife. Police confirmed the arrest and said the suspect used a cutlass during the attack in broad daylight.

According to the state police spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the incident occurred on February 1, 2026, at about 12:30 p.m. in the market square of Bundila Village. The suspect, identified as Alhaji Hassan Umaru, reportedly confronted Sukari Abdul, a 45-year-old villager, after suspecting him of having a relationship with his wife. The dispute quickly escalated, and Umaru allegedly attacked Abdul with a cutlass.

After the assault, Abdul was rushed to the Bularaba Primary Health Care Facility for medical attention but was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner. Police said they swiftly apprehended Umaru at the scene and recovered the cutlass believed to have been used in the killing.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet and thorough investigation, as authorities work to prepare charges against the suspect.

Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, used the occasion to caution residents against taking the law into their own hands, particularly in marital or social disputes. He urged members of the public to report grievances to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence.

The tragic incident reignites concerns about violent personal disputes escalating into deadly confrontations in rural communities, and highlights ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing acts of vigilantism and ensuring access to justice in such matters.
