Minna, Nigeria — The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, reporting that 71.63 per cent of candidates achieved the minimum benchmark of five credits including English Language and Mathematics. The result announcement was made public on Wednesday at the examination council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State

Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Dantani Ibrahim-Wushishi, announced that out of the total number of candidates who sat for the 2025 external exams, 68,166 candidates secured the required passes. The 2025 SSCE External was conducted between 26 November and 13 December 2025, with marking and collation concluding in January 2026.

In addition to the core measure, the registrar highlighted that a higher number – 82,082 candidates, or 86.26 per cent – obtained five credits and above, regardless of performance in English and Mathematics, reflecting a broader measure of overall academic achievement.

The SSCE External is designed mainly for private candidates, including those who missed the internal exams or are seeking to improve previous results. The certification is recognised for tertiary institution admission, employment eligibility and professional development across Nigeria.

Stakeholders in education have noted that consistent release of results at this performance level underscores the continued resilience of candidates and examination systems, even as concerns around exam malpractice and the integrity of assessments persist in national discourse. The results come at a crucial time for educational planning and selection into higher institutions, with many candidates now poised to pursue further studies or career pathways based on their outcomes.
