Aba, Abia State — The Abia State Police Command has dismissed widespread reports that a bomb or explosive device was discovered at the United Evangelical Church, Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba, clarifying that no such device was recovered following investigations. Authorities said the situation was linked to a road reconstruction dispute and not a bomb scare.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said thorough inquiries conducted by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) covering the area confirmed that no explosive or improvised explosive device (IED) was found at the church premises. Officers verified that an iron rod — part of a structural pillar being adjusted on site — was removed during a military intervention but was not a bomb or explosive.
The clarification follows earlier media reports and social media posts claiming that over 100 lives were saved after soldiers evacuated a suspected bomb from the church compound. Those reports said an object was unearthed during construction work as members of the church were digging to erect a new fence. Soldiers were said to have been alerted and responded to the scene.
Police explained that the incident was connected to an ongoing road reconstruction project by the Abia State Government. The church building had reportedly encroached on the corridor designated for the expansion. After the directive to adjust its structure was not followed, military personnel were deployed to enforce compliance with the realignment. During the process, an iron rod was removed and later misreported as an explosive device.
The Police Command reassured residents that the Nigeria Police, as the lead internal security agency in the state, remains vigilant in ensuring the protection of lives and property. Officers are deployed strategically across Abia State to maintain safety and security amid ongoing infrastructure projects and community activities.
Authorities have urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official sources to prevent misinformation and unnecessary alarm.
