UYO, Akwa Ibom State — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued an 81-year-old man from a suspected fraudulent syndicate operating in Uyo and surrounding communities, following an intelligence-led operation that led to multiple arrests. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, who detailed the unfolding of the operation and the measures taken to apprehend the suspects.
According to the police, the operation was prompted by a tip-off from a vigilant citizen who reported the activities of the group. The syndicate, police said, had been using tricycles to deceive members of the public, targeting unsuspecting victims to fraudulently acquire money and valuables. Acting promptly on the information, officers executed an operation on Tuesday, February 3, at approximately 3:30 p.m., leading to the arrest of three individuals linked to the criminal network.
DSP John noted that the police recovered the operational vehicle used by the syndicate, a tricycle bearing registration number UFG-886-QA, which had been employed to lure and transport victims. The suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in multiple fraud cases, detailing how they deceived residents across Uyo and nearby towns.
The spokesperson emphasised that the police are conducting further investigations to identify additional victims and gather their statements. Authorities also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
The police highlighted the importance of community vigilance in combating such criminal networks and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities promptly. DSP John stressed that timely information from the public is crucial to the police’s ability to respond effectively and protect vulnerable citizens.
The rescue of the elderly man underscores both the risks posed by organized fraud operations in the region and the proactive measures taken by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to safeguard residents, particularly vulnerable individuals, from financial exploitation.
