BIRNIN KEBBI, Kebbi State — A High Court in Kebbi State has sentenced Suleman Jidda, a 30-year-old resident of the Bayan Kara area, to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of committing an unnatural offence against a 10-year-old boy. The judgment was delivered following a protracted legal process that began with Jidda’s arraignment on November 8, 2024.
Jidda faced a one-count charge of unnatural offence under Section 260 of the Kebbi State Penal Code Law, 2021, which criminalises sexual acts deemed unnatural with minors or other victims. The prosecution presented evidence detailing the circumstances of the offence, including testimonies from the victim, witnesses, and forensic examinations that corroborated the claim against the accused.
The presiding judge, after considering the evidence and the severity of the crime, ruled that the case merited the maximum punishment prescribed by law, sentencing Jidda to life imprisonment without the option of fine. The court emphasised the importance of upholding child protection laws and sending a strong message that sexual offences against minors will attract strict and uncompromising penalties.
Authorities from the Kebbi State Ministry of Justice welcomed the ruling, noting that it demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children and enforcing the state’s legal provisions against sexual crimes. Child protection advocates also hailed the decision as a step toward deterring potential offenders and reinforcing public confidence in the legal system’s ability to safeguard minors.
The case is part of broader efforts by Kebbi State law enforcement and judicial authorities to prosecute sexual offences and safeguard children from abuse, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities where awareness and reporting mechanisms have historically been limited.
