ENUGU — The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended a suspected member of the Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) following intelligence on his location within the state.

Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team conducted a targeted raid on a beer parlour in Akwuke, Awkunanaw Local Government Area, at approximately 12:45 a.m. on February 3, 2026, acting on credible tips regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. During the operation, the suspect attempted to flee but was intercepted and taken into custody without incident.

The arrested individual has been identified as Chukwujekwu Ugwu, 26, also known by the alias “Jekwu.” Police reports indicate that Jekwu and other associates — who remain at large — were allegedly involved in previous attacks on Distress Response Squad (DRS) patrol teams, including assaults at Ziks Avenue, Uwani on December 27, 2025, and Agbani Road on January 15, 2026.

Security sources stated that ongoing investigations aim to apprehend additional members of the gang and to recover firearms and other weapons reportedly used in earlier attacks. The police emphasised that the arrest reflects sustained intelligence-led operations targeting criminal networks that threaten public safety in Enugu State.

Authorities continue to urge residents to provide actionable information to assist in tracking and neutralising other armed operatives still at large, while maintaining vigilance in high-risk areas.
