Four Nigerian Army soldiers have been confirmed killed after insurgents from Boko Haram carried out a deadly ambush at Auno, near Jakana, along the strategic **Maiduguri–Damaturu highway in Borno State. The attack occurred late on the night of Thursday, February 5, 2026, when the troops were reportedly heading to reinforce colleagues already engaged with militants in the area.
According to military sources, the ambush was executed using a “maximum” trap involving controlled mines placed along the roadside. The soldiers’ gun truck triggered the explosive, fatally injuring four of the servicemen who were pronounced dead later. One of the deceased was identified by comrades as Saidu, remembered as an affable and dedicated soldier.
Auno, situated about 24 kilometres from Maiduguri, has remained a volatile flashpoint in Borno State due to sustained insurgent activity by Boko Haram and its affiliate, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Security agencies regularly report ambushes, roadside bombings, and assaults on both military and civilian targets along this highway, which is a key supply and troop movement route in the northeast.
The Nigerian Army has not immediately released an official casualty list or statement, but local defence sources confirmed the fatalities and indicated that the ambush underscores the enduring threat posed by Boko Haram in the region. The area has witnessed repeated attacks on troops and convoys in recent years despite ongoing counter‑insurgency operations by the military and joint task forces.
Security analysts have described the continued attacks along major arteries such as the Maiduguri–Damaturu road as part of insurgents’ broader strategy to undermine government control and disrupt military mobility in the northeast. The loss of soldiers in such ambushes highlights the risks faced by Nigerian troops in ongoing efforts to contain and neutralise Boko Haram and ISWAP elements, which remain active despite years of sustained military pressure.
