A tragic road accident in Lagos State on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, claimed the lives of a driver and a passenger after a commercial minibus overturned and burst into flames along the Okota–Isolo corridor of the city.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, saying the yellow commercial bus — popularly known locally as a “Faka” with registration number SMK 823 YK — was travelling toward Mile 2 when it was forced to brake suddenly after an unidentified private car reversed onto the main carriageway. The abrupt manoeuvre caused the minibus to lose control, somersault several times and catch fire, according to the official account. Petrol stored inside the vehicle ignited the blaze, intensifying the inferno.

Officials reported that the driver and a female passenger seated in front were trapped inside and burnt beyond recognition as the fire engulfed the vehicle. Emergency responders from LASTMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) were deployed alongside the Ilasa Police Division. They were able to rescue eight other passengers from the wreckage and rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Initial findings suggested that a five-litre container of petrol inside the bus spilled during the crash and ignited, turning the accident into a deadly inferno. Traffic and security officials on the scene secured the area and managed traffic while rescue operations continued.

The tragedy has prompted renewed calls from road safety advocates for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and public awareness on the dangers of carrying fuel or other inflammable materials inside passenger vehicles. Authorities also advised motorists to maintain safe following distances and avoid risky driving behaviours that can escalate accidents into fatal disasters.
