Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have detained three male suspects following an intelligence‑led security operation in Enugu State, resulting in the recovery of firearms, ammunition and other incriminating items.
According to a statement issued by the command, officers acting on credible information arrested the suspects on Friday, February 16, 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the state. The command disclosed that weapons and ammunition were recovered from the suspects during the operation, though specific quantities and types of firearms were not detailed in the initial briefing.
Police Public Relations officers said the arrests form part of a wider crackdown on criminality in the South‑East, where similar operations had led to multiple arrests and weapons recoveries in recent months. In January, the command announced the detention of 52 suspects and the recovery of arms and ammunition in operations across the state, including the rescue of kidnapped victims, underscoring a heightened campaign against illicit guns and violent offenders.
The latest arrests come amid concerns over illegal possession of firearms, cultism, armed robbery and other violent crimes in both urban and rural areas of Enugu State. Police patrols and targeted missions have been intensified in communities where criminal networks are believed to be most active, including border forests and transportation corridors. Authorities said the detentions would be followed by investigations to determine the suspects’ involvement in specific offences and to prepare charges for prosecution where appropriate.
While details about the identities of the arrested individuals and the exact location of their arrest were not immediately provided, state police commanders reiterated their commitment to tackling violent crime through sustained enforcement actions. Residents were urged to continue reporting suspicious activities and to cooperate with security agencies to improve public safety across the state.
It is part of a broader pattern of security engagements in Enugu, where police have in recent months carried out operations that led to arrests of armed robbery and cultism suspects, as well as recoveries of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and other illegal items in separate enforcement actions.
Authorities have not yet announced whether any of the three suspects arrested on Friday have been formally charged or arraigned, but they are understood to be in police custody pending further interrogations and formal court processes.
