Armed bandits equipped with sophisticated weapons were reported to be shooting sporadically in Kurya-Kankara, also known as Hurya village, under Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, triggering panic among residents and renewed calls for immediate security intervention.

Local sources indicated that the gunmen entered the community and began firing indiscriminately, forcing villagers to flee into surrounding areas for safety. The sound of gunfire, witnesses said, echoed across the settlement, creating confusion and fear, particularly among women, children and the elderly. As of the time of filing this report, there was no confirmed account of casualties or abductions, though communication with some parts of the village remained limited.

Kurya-Kankara lies within Malumfashi Local Government Area, a region that has experienced intermittent security challenges linked to banditry in recent years. Communities in parts of Katsina State have faced repeated attacks involving kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling and armed raids on rural settlements. The porous terrain and proximity to forested corridors have often enabled armed groups to move swiftly between villages and evade capture.

Residents in Hurya appealed to security agencies for rapid deployment of personnel to contain the situation and prevent escalation. Community leaders stressed the urgency of intervention, warning that delayed response could embolden attackers and increase the risk of casualties or abductions.

Katsina State authorities have, in previous months, intensified joint security operations involving the military, police and local vigilante groups aimed at dismantling bandit enclaves. Air and ground offensives have been conducted in forest zones believed to harbour criminal networks. However, sporadic attacks continue to surface, particularly in rural communities with limited security presence.

Security analysts note that rapid response capability remains critical in such incidents. Early containment can disrupt attackers’ objectives, which frequently include kidnapping for ransom or intimidation of local populations. They also emphasise the importance of improved intelligence gathering and community reporting mechanisms to anticipate threats before they materialise.

At press time, there was no official statement from security agencies confirming the scale of the incident or detailing operational measures underway. Residents remain on edge as they await reinforcement and assurance of safety.

The situation is developing, and further updates are expected as authorities assess the security conditions in Kurya-Kankara and surrounding communities in Malumfashi LGA.
