LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has condemned operators of the so-called ‘Korope’ minibuses for causing severe traffic congestion along the Lekki–Epe Expressway by staging a protest against restrictions on their operations.
According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the demonstration disrupted traffic flow and violated previously agreed transport reforms designed to regulate commercial transport services across the state. The government described the operators’ action as “counterproductive and contrary to the principles of organized transport management.”
The protest reportedly involved the obstruction of major lanes, resulting in long gridlocks during peak hours and significant inconvenience for motorists and commuters. Witnesses said several minibuses stopped abruptly along the carriageway, preventing free movement of vehicles for several hours.
The Lagos State Government emphasized that while it respects the rights of transport workers, any form of protest that undermines public safety or violates traffic regulations would not be tolerated. Officials reminded operators that the ongoing transport reform initiative, including licensing, designated stops, and route management, is aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and passenger convenience across the state.
Authorities have called on the operators to return to compliance with the regulatory framework and warned that law enforcement agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force, would take strict action against any future obstruction of traffic.
The state government also reiterated its commitment to dialogue with transport unions to address grievances, while stressing that public safety and orderly traffic flow remain non-negotiable priorities.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between informal transport operators and regulatory authorities in Lagos, as the state continues to enforce reforms intended to modernize and streamline urban transportation systems.
