The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a restriction of movement across the territory as part of security preparations for the Area Council Elections scheduled for Saturday, 21 February 2026.
The restriction, confirmed in an official statement by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, will be in force from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day and applies to all residents and commuters within the FCT. Exemptions are limited to essential service providers and duly accredited election officials.
Police authorities said the measure is intended to support a peaceful, safe and credible electoral process by reducing the potential for violence, intimidation or disruptions during voting and collation activities. The FCT Police Command urged all residents to remain law-abiding and cooperative with security personnel deployed across polling units, collation centres and strategic locations.
In the statement issued on 20 February 2026, the command also encouraged citizens to remain alert and to report any suspicious persons or activities to the police. Two emergency contact numbers were provided for public use: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
The FCT Command’s decision follows coordinated planning with other security agencies and reflects heightened security readiness ahead of the elections, which cover all six Area Councils — Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali.
