Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party, has constituted a special legal team to scrutinize the outcome of the recently concluded area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, intensifying political tensions after the ruling All Progressives Congress secured victory in five of the six chairmanship seats. The elections, conducted across the six area councils of Abuja, have triggered allegations of irregularities, including claims of vote buying and procedural breaches.
Results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed that the APC won chairmanship positions in the Abuja Municipal, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje area councils, while the PDP secured a single chairmanship seat in Gwagwalada. The PDP, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, acknowledged the announcement of results but expressed concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. According to the party, preliminary assessments indicated irregularities in several polling units, prompting the formation of a legal committee tasked with reviewing election materials, collation procedures and compliance with electoral guidelines.
