Authorities in Ebonyi State have arrested a senior official of the All Progressives Congress in connection with the kidnapping and killing of a traditional ruler, a development that has shocked residents and sparked widespread condemnation across the state.
The arrest followed the abduction and subsequent death of His Royal Highness Eze Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu‑Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The late monarch was also the father of former Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Eric Kelechi Igwe.
Police authorities confirmed that the monarch was kidnapped on March 1, 2026, while reportedly on his way to attend a church service. His disappearance triggered an intensive search operation involving security agencies and intelligence units in the state.
Investigators deployed both technical and intelligence assets in tracking down the suspected kidnappers. Their efforts led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be members of the kidnapping syndicate. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed that the monarch had been killed by the gang shortly after the abduction.
The suspects later guided security operatives to the gang’s hideout where the remains of the monarch were eventually recovered. However, when police approached the location, other members of the criminal group allegedly opened fire on the officers, leading to a shootout between the security forces and the kidnappers.
Police said the operatives responded with superior firepower during the confrontation, resulting in the death of one of the suspected kidnappers while others fled the scene. Following the encounter, additional arrests were made, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to nine. A locally made pistol was also recovered during the operation.
Investigators later traced part of the ransom demand through a bank account allegedly used in the operation. The account reportedly became a crucial clue that helped authorities unravel the network behind the kidnapping.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Simbad Victor Ogbuatu, the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State. Police suspect that he may have had a role in facilitating aspects of the ransom transaction linked to the crime.
According to reports from investigators, the kidnappers had allegedly demanded money from the monarch’s family and provided a bank account number for the payment. The account later became the key evidence that helped security agencies track those believed to be involved in the operation.
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State confirmed the arrest during a condolence visit to the bereaved family. The governor described the killing of the traditional ruler as a tragic and unacceptable act, vowing that all individuals connected to the crime would be brought to justice.
During the visit, the governor disclosed that the arrest of the party official followed intelligence linking the ransom payment to an account connected to him. Although he initially suspected the claim might be unverified, he reportedly approved the arrest to allow investigators to question the suspect and determine the extent of his involvement.
The death of the monarch has deeply affected the Ndufu‑Alike community and surrounding areas. The late Eze Francis Igwe was regarded as a respected elder statesman and community leader whose influence extended beyond traditional leadership.
Family members and community leaders have expressed grief and outrage over the incident, describing the killing as a devastating loss to the community. Many residents have called for stronger security measures and swift prosecution of those responsible for the crime.
Governor Nwifuru, while addressing community members, described the late monarch as an accomplished leader and assured the family that the government would pursue justice vigorously. The governor also temporarily suspended official engagements to personally visit the bereaved family and express condolences.
The killing has reignited concerns about kidnapping and violent crime in parts of southeastern Nigeria, where criminal groups have increasingly targeted prominent individuals and community leaders.
Security agencies say investigations are continuing, particularly in tracking down other members of the kidnapping gang who managed to escape during the police raid. Authorities have vowed that those responsible will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the suspects already arrested remain in police custody as detectives continue to analyze evidence, including financial transactions and communication records believed to be linked to the operation.
The tragic killing of the monarch has intensified calls from residents and civil society groups for stronger collaboration between communities and security agencies to combat kidnapping and organized crime in the region. For many in Ebonyi State, the case represents not only a painful loss but also a critical test of the justice system’s ability to hold perpetrators accountable, especially when allegations involve individuals in influential political positions.
