The Imo State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered a pistol along with seven rounds of live ammunition following an attempted robbery in the state capital, Owerri.
According to the command’s spokesman, Henry Okoye, the suspects tried to rob a man of his gold chain while he was at a car wash in the Mangrove area of Aladinma. The victim raised the alarm, prompting a swift response from police operatives.
The suspects, identified as 29-year-old Solomon Ejekwe of Ubaha Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government Area and 35-year-old Emeka Charles of Umuopara Ngugo in Ikeduru Local Government Area, attempted to flee the scene on a motorcycle. They were apprehended after the victim and local residents confronted them, and the police subsequently took control.
During the arrest, police recovered a pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition believed to have been used in the robbery attempt. The suspects were taken into custody and have undergone preliminary medical checks at the police medical centre. They are expected to be charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition following the completion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, commended the prompt response of the police operatives and highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and law enforcement in tackling crime. He also cautioned residents against mob justice, urging them to allow the legal system to handle apprehended suspects.
This arrest is part of ongoing operations by the Imo State Police Command to combat violent crime, including kidnapping, cultism, and armed robbery. Recent security initiatives have led to the arrest of hundreds of suspects and the recovery of numerous firearms and other weapons, reinforcing the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
