A passenger bus plunged into the Ariyo River at Ariyo Bridge in Ibadan, Oyo State, in a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of three people, while five others were rescued alive. The incident occurred along Amuloko Road and prompted an immediate response from emergency personnel and local residents.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency reported that the distress call about the accident was received on Wednesday. Firefighters and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene, where they found a Suzuki passenger bus with registration number LEW 484 XA submerged in the river. Preliminary reports indicate that the bus lost control before veering off the road and into the river, with reckless driving suspected as a contributing factor.
Rescuers, aided by local residents, worked promptly to evacuate survivors from the bus. Five passengers were pulled alive and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while three bodies were recovered and handed over to police authorities from the Ogbere Divisional Headquarters for identification and further procedures.
Eyewitnesses described how community members rushed to the scene to assist in pulling the bus from the water and helping those trapped, likely preventing further fatalities. Officials from the fire service and the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency were also present to manage the situation and provide support.
Authorities have stressed the importance of road safety, urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, especially on routes with bridges and near water bodies. The Oyo State government has reiterated its commitment to road safety awareness and enforcement measures to reduce traffic accidents across the state.
Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, with police and transport authorities reviewing circumstances leading to the accident. Families of the victims and survivors are receiving medical care and support as needed.
