Minna, Niger State, Nigeria — A 50‑year‑old meat seller, Usman Abubakar, has been arrested and is currently in police custody following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 12‑year‑old boy in the Angwan‑Daji area of Niger State. The incident, which has drawn strong condemnation from law enforcement and raised concern among residents, reportedly occurred while the minor was on an errand for his family.

According to local sources, the boy visited Abubakar’s meat stall to purchase meat for his mother. After returning home, the boy’s mother noticed that he appeared distressed, in pain, and had bruises around his lower body. Concerned, she questioned him and he disclosed that he had been assaulted by Abubakar in the shop. The family immediately reported the matter to the police.

Police operatives responded swiftly and arrested Abubakar at his stall. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the offence, admitting that he lured the boy into the shop before committing the alleged assault. The confession has been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was being held for further investigation and would be prosecuted in court. Authorities have arranged a medical examination for the boy to assess the extent of his injuries and document evidence for the case.

The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, CP Adamu Elleman, condemned the alleged assault, describing it as an appalling act of gross indecency and a severe violation of Nigerian law. He pledged that the suspect would face the full weight of the law once investigations were complete and reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on crimes against children.

Police also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, emphasising that adults in positions of community trust should not be assumed safe simply because of age or profession. Community members are advised to monitor the wellbeing of children and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Child protection advocates in Niger State have called for increased public education on preventing and reporting child abuse, noting that exploitation of minors often goes unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of awareness. They emphasised that early detection, prompt reporting, and comprehensive legal action are essential to deterring offenders and protecting vulnerable children.

The young victim remains under the care of his family and is receiving medical attention and psychological support from volunteers and child welfare organisations to help him recover from the traumatic experience. Community elders and civil society groups have urged a swift resolution of the case to ensure justice is served and reassure residents that Nigeria’s legal system can protect children from abuse.

The arrest of Abubakar and the ongoing investigation highlight the need for robust protective measures for minors across Nigeria. The Niger State Police have reiterated their commitment to prosecuting the suspect and reinforcing community partnerships to prevent similar incidents in the future.
