A tragic incident in Ekeowe community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has left a 47-year-old man dead after he collapsed during a communal punishment administered over allegations of sexually assaulting a ten-year-old girl. The incident has drawn attention to the challenges of balancing traditional practices with formal legal procedures.
According to local sources, the man, identified as Emi, was apprehended after the alleged assault occurred while the child was returning home with her aunt. Following the report, community members decided to carry out a traditional form of punishment, which involved multiple strokes of the cane delivered by representatives from local families. The man collapsed after receiving forty strokes and was later pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility.
The death triggered unrest within the community, with relatives and other residents staging protests and expressing anger over the circumstances surrounding the punishment. Some property damage was reported during the ensuing tension, highlighting the volatility that can arise in situations where communal justice and formal legal processes intersect.
Authorities have called for calm and emphasised that allegations of serious crimes should be reported to the police to ensure due process. Security operatives have been deployed to the area to maintain order and investigate both the alleged crime and the circumstances of the man’s death. Several individuals involved in administering the punishment have been taken into custody for questioning as investigations continue.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to a medical facility for further examination, and officials have confirmed that a formal report will follow after completion of the investigation. Community leaders and child protection advocates have stressed the importance of addressing allegations of sexual offences through established legal channels rather than informal punitive measures.
The incident has drawn attention to the broader issue of extrajudicial or communal punishments in parts of Nigeria, highlighting the risks associated with such practices and the importance of strengthening public trust in formal legal systems. Authorities and advocates continue to call for education, awareness, and support systems to protect children and ensure justice is carried out safely and lawfully.
