ABUJA, Nigeria — Authorities in Anambra State have apprehended a man suspected of transporting children believed to have been purchased for ₦3.5 million. The suspect was intercepted while travelling from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, reportedly heading toward Sagamu in Ogun State.

Police sources and state child protection officials confirmed that the children were travelling without guardians or proper documentation, prompting an immediate investigation. The suspect was taken into custody by the Anambra State Police Command’s Special Anti‑Touting Squad, and authorities began efforts to identify the children and trace their families.

Preliminary reports suggest that the children may have been acquired under suspicious and unlawful circumstances. Officials emphasized that protecting the minors’ safety and well‑being was their top priority. The children have been placed in protective custody, receiving medical assessments and psychological support while the investigation continues.

The suspect is being investigated for potential violations of Nigeria’s anti‑trafficking and child protection laws. Police have indicated that additional arrests may be made if further links to criminal networks are discovered. Coordination with law enforcement in Ebonyi and Ogun states is ongoing to verify the circumstances surrounding the acquisition and transport of the children.

Child rights organisations and civil society groups have condemned the alleged crime, calling for stronger oversight along major transit routes and stricter enforcement of child protection laws. Authorities have urged the public to provide any information that could assist in determining the origins of the children, the identities of their families, and whether there is a wider network involved in their movement.

The investigation remains active as officials continue to ensure that the minors are safely reunited with their families and that the suspect is brought to justice under relevant Nigerian laws.
