Security forces in Maiduguri, Borno State, have successfully rescued a seven‑year‑old boy from his abductors, arrested several suspects, and recovered ransom funds, authorities confirmed. The operation, carried out by the Borno State Police Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, is part of ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping and violent crime in the region.
According to police reports, the incident began on the evening of March 23, 2026, when the boy was abducted in the Chad Basin area of Maiduguri. His father formally reported the kidnapping to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) the following day, triggering an immediate investigation. Initial inquiries revealed that the kidnappers contacted the boy’s mother through a concealed mobile number and demanded a ransom of ten million naira. After negotiations, the demand was reduced to eight million naira, with a partial payment of one million five hundred thousand naira made into a point-of-sale account provided by the suspects.
The ransom payment became a critical lead in the investigation. Detectives conducted intensive digital forensic analysis of the transaction and traced the account to a local POS operator, whose arrest marked the first major breakthrough. Subsequent coordinated operations led to the detention of four additional individuals believed to be connected with the kidnapping. All five suspects are reported to be residents of the Chad Basin and Bulabulin Alajiri areas of Maiduguri. Police indicated that the group acted in concert to carry out the abduction and manage the ransom communication and financial logistics.
The missing boy was located and rescued during the operation. He was found unharmed and immediately taken to a medical facility for evaluation before being safely reunited with his family, bringing relief to relatives and residents who had been anxious about his wellbeing. In addition to the successful rescue, the police recovered the ransom amount that had been paid by the family, an outcome officials described as a significant achievement reflecting the effectiveness of modern investigative techniques.
The case remains under active investigation, and the suspects will be charged in court once preliminary inquiries are complete.
