Police in Rivers State have initiated a full-scale investigation into the fatal shooting of a woman identified as Special Bensington after she was ambushed by suspected gunmen riding in a tricycle in Port Harcourt. The Rivers State Police Command described the incident as a priority case and is working to identify and apprehend those responsible while continuing forensic and witness inquiries.

The attack occurred on March 19, 2026, along the Total Gospel area off Odili Road, a busy corridor connecting residential and commercial districts in Port Harcourt. Bensington and her friend, Divine Anyanwu, had boarded a Bolt ride from a hotel on Emmanuel Road. As the vehicle moved through the area, it was reportedly followed and then confronted by armed men in a tricycle, who opened fire, striking Bensington.

Responding officers from the Abuloma Police Division quickly secured the scene and coordinated medical evacuation. Bensington was taken to Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital but later died from her injuries. Her body was deposited at a mortuary pending post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police described the attack as a heinous and premeditated act. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where detectives are reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing witnesses, and examining forensic evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events. Authorities have called on members of the public with relevant information to assist in identifying and locating the suspects.

Preliminary reports suggest that the assailants may have trailed Bensington and her friend from the hotel before carrying out the shooting, indicating planning rather than a random act of violence. The use of a tricycle by the attackers highlights the tactical challenges police face, as such vehicles can navigate traffic easily and facilitate rapid escape.

Port Harcourt has faced security challenges in recent years, including armed robbery, gang violence, and targeted attacks. Analysts note that urban areas often have gaps in surveillance and law enforcement coverage that can be exploited by criminals. To address these risks, police have increased mobile patrols, strengthened intelligence gathering, and engaged community stakeholders to improve public safety.

The killing has drawn widespread concern from residents and civil society groups. Many called for enhanced security along major travel routes, especially during high-traffic hours. The incident has heightened fears among commuters and families about personal safety in everyday travel. Experts stress the importance of combining reactive policing with proactive measures, such as early warning systems, community engagement, and improved law enforcement coordination, to reduce the risk of violent incidents.

The Rivers State Police Command has pledged to ensure justice is served. Investigators are examining ballistic evidence, mapping the incident route, and following up on leads that may reveal the identity or motive of the gunmen. Authorities have assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and that cooperation from local residents is essential.

For the family and friends of Special Bensington, the loss is profound and underscores the dangers ordinary citizens can face amid rising urban crime. The police have promised regular updates as the investigation progresses and continue to appeal for calm while pursuing a resolution to the case.
