ONDO, Nigeria — The Ondo State Police Command has launched an extensive security operation to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the Easter festive period. Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal announced the deployment of additional personnel across the state, focusing on worship centres, major highways, markets, recreational areas, and other public spaces. The initiative aims to maintain order, prevent crime, and provide rapid response in case of emergencies.

The deployment strategy is intelligence-driven, combining overt patrols with covert surveillance. Specialized units, including Tactical Teams, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Unit, Police Mobile Force, and State Intelligence operatives, have been fully mobilized to respond to potential threats efficiently.

The security measures follow directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who called for enhanced policing nationwide during public holidays. The Ondo State Government has also supported the initiative, coordinating with security agencies to strengthen surveillance and community engagement.

The Easter operation comes in the context of previous security challenges in the state. Earlier in 2026, gunmen attacked communities in Akure North and Akoko South West Local Government Areas, including abductions of vulnerable individuals. There have also been incidents of armed assaults near transportation hubs and public spaces, highlighting the need for reinforced security. These past events, along with the historic attack on a church in Owo in 2022, underscore the importance of proactive safety measures during large gatherings.

Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via official communication channels. Authorities emphasize the importance of community cooperation in ensuring public safety.

The Ondo State Police Command has assured the public that these measures are designed to allow citizens to travel, attend services, participate in gatherings, and enjoy the Easter festivities without fear. The command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful and secure environment throughout the holiday period.
