Ogun State, Nigeria — Police in Ogun State have arrested a 37‑year‑old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a fellow patron at a local beer parlour, after what authorities describe as a dispute over an unpaid debt of N25,000. The incident, which occurred late on Sunday night in the Agbado area of Ifo Local Government, has drawn significant attention from law enforcement and community leaders amid growing concerns about violent confrontations linked to personal disagreements.

According to a statement from the Ogun State Police Command, officers were alerted to a violent confrontation at a beer parlour where patrons had gathered when a man identified as 37‑year‑old Opeyemi Olaniyan arrived to press for repayment of money he said was owed to him. Police said Olaniyan and the eventual victim, Ayomide Oyekunle, became involved in a heated dispute after the debt was raised. Authorities believe Olaniyan had been seeking repayment of the N25,000 over an extended period and tensions over the unresolved obligation had grown in the days leading up to the incident.

Eyewitnesses told responding officers that the argument intensified quickly, with Olaniyan becoming agitated when his demand was not immediately met. At some point during the exchange, according to police accounts, Olaniyan allegedly pulled a sharp object and stabbed Oyekunle. The victim suffered severe wounds and was rushed by bystanders to a nearby medical facility for treatment. He was taken to a hospital in the area but was later pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained.

Police moved swiftly to the scene following the report of a stabbing and were able to arrest Olaniyan without further incident. The suspect was taken into custody and is being held by the Ogun State Police Command as investigations continue. The police confirmed that further forensic examinations and a detailed inquiry are underway to establish all circumstances surrounding the clash and determine the appropriate charges.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Ogun State, while confirming the arrest, emphasised that officers recovered evidence from the scene and that the suspect will face prosecution according to the law. The body of the victim has been deposited at a morgue facility in the state, where autopsy procedures will be carried out as part of the investigative process.

Family members of Oyekunle have been informed of his death, and local authorities are working to ensure they receive official updates as the case progresses. Police have urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to seek peaceful and lawful resolution of disputes, especially those involving financial disagreements, to prevent similar tragedies.

The incident has reignited conversations in the community about the risks posed by unresolved debts and the dangers of allowing financial disagreements to escalate into violence. Local leaders and law enforcement officials have called on residents to exercise restraint and use conflict‑resolution mechanisms that do not involve weapons or threats.

As the investigation continues, authorities said Olaniyan will be arraigned in court once formal charges have been prepared and the necessary legal procedures completed. The State Police Command reiterated its commitment to pursuing justice in the matter and addressing all elements of violent crime with diligence.
