The origins of the crisis can be traced to a pivotal meeting held on July 2, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. The gathering, initially intended to formalize the adoption of the ADC by coalition partners, took an unexpected turn when the party’s founder and then national chairman, Ralph Nwosu, announced his resignation alongside other key officials. According to Bala, Nwosu proceeded to introduce former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola as acting national chairman and national secretary, respectively, without what he describes as due process or consensus.
Bala has consistently challenged the legitimacy of that transition, arguing that the party’s constitution does not empower an outgoing chairman to unilaterally appoint successors. He maintains that there was no formal vote or agreement among the National Working Committee members and that several stakeholders were caught off guard by the announcement.
Despite being physically present at the event, evidence of which circulated widely in videos, Bala insists his attendance should not be interpreted as endorsement of the new leadership arrangement.
